Hello friends of Schumacher Place!

We, the SPCA Board, would like to invite you to join the Schumacher Place Civic Association if you have not done so already. We would love to have you as a member! 2014 is going to be an exciting year for us and we want your help. We need all the volunteers and participants we can get in order to pull off our biggest year yet. Our focus for the first half of this year has been on Governance, Membership, and Communication. Our monthly membership meetings and monthly socials continue. This year’s Schumacher Place Block Party will be June 21, 4-9pm, on Columbus Street between Beech and Bruck Streets and we hope to see you there. We would also value your input on things that you would like to see happen in the neighborhood. Our next membership meeting is Tuesday, June 17th. Please join us to hear more about the association and to volunteer in whatever way you are able.

You will find a membership form at the Schumacher Place Civic Association web site, via the Membership Form tab at www.schumacherplace.org. The Join the SPCA tab provides the ability to pay via PayPal.

If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact us at schumacherplace@gmail.com. We are striving to make our communication with our members a number one priority. We hope that you will take a minute to apply for membership in an effort to make this neighborhood even better. Let’s all work together to make 2014 a memorable year for our neighborhood.

 Thanks!

Every day we get just a little bit older. And that is a good thing. The challenge many of us face is how to remain in our homes in Schumacher Place that we have known and loved for years. Please join our membership meeting on Tuesday, April 15, 6:30-8:00pm at Plank's Cafe, 743 Parsons Avenue, to hear from Village Connections. "Village Connections is an urban, community based non-profit organization that empowers members to lead an active and engaged lifestyle in their own homes as they age." Village Connections serves the neighborhoods of German Village, Schumacher Place, Merion Village, The Brewery District and Downtown Columbus.

In addition we will cover topical neighborhood and association related news. All are welcome.

Plant Pride on Parsons Shoe Collection

Plant Pride on Parsons is conducting a shoe collection drive on April 1-25 to raise funds for Parsons Avenue Plants while benefiting developing nations and keeping old shoes out of local landfills.

Individuals can help by donating gently worn & used shoes. Please place your shoes and boots in a bag and drop them off on the porch of Kathy Green at 458 E Whittier or Dwight Garner at 895 Beech Street or at a drop box at Schiller Park Recreation Center.

In the US alone, approximately 630 million pairs of shoes are thrown away per year. The materials used to manufacture a pair of shoes are created from chemical compounds that will create health hazards if left to disintegrate openly or in landfills. By donating your gently worn, used shoes, your shoes are given a second chance to make a difference.

All donated shoes will be redistributed to partners through Funds2Orgs and used in developing nations for impoverished people to start, maintain, and grow a unique business opportunity to feed, clothe, and house their families.

The additional advantages of diverting shoes from the waste stream to create commerce and sustainability in peoples’ lives make this a win-win for everyone. The only way we can do that is if community members step up and help. I am calling on everyone to clean out their unwanted, gently worn, used shoes and donate them to us
