Schumacher Days Events

Participate in Schumacher Days Events!
September 16, 2012, Noon to 4 PM
This is the second in a series of five announcements about the art- and history-related activities of Schumacher Days.  Each announcement tells you what to expect when you arrive on the 16th and provides you opportunity to contribute to its success in advance.  Remember, most of you ARE SPCA and we can not pull this off without you.  If you are willing and able, step up and help us carry out the activity.  Every little bit of pre-activity participation will add up to a great event for all.  Otherwise, come and have fun!  Participating either way is fine by us!

If the Walls Could Talk:  The Histories of Our Homes
Location:  Fence at the intersection of Forest and Beech Streets
At the event…
1)  Read the postings about the homes of Schumacher Place and beyond.   2)  In the white space around other postings, using the ‘voice’ of your home, apartment, or other abode, write a short story, a poem, or  a single phrase about events that you know occurred there—either current or long ago.  3)   If you want to post a photo of your home too, you can post it later today or  until September 20.  4)  2PM-3PM:  Visit with a stately gentleman at the site about history of homes in the area and historical events.
.
Before the event…
Prepare to post!  This is an opportunity to research the history of your home.  Phil Winkelmann,  philwinkelmann@hotmail.com, is willing to provide you with some direction for use of the library.  Or, prepare to write down snippets about life in your abode now or that you have learned through time.  If you need some examples or don’t quite get ‘voice’, below are some examples about the walls of 799 Beech Street.

There’s a poet on my porch!  I see food I remember my former owners making.  And, people are dancing in my driveway with paint on their feet!   What a weird day!
September 16, 2012

I believe it was the spring of 1987.  Mike had just purchased me.  When he wasn’t home his fellow graduate students surprised him by bringing a portable hot tub to the driveway, a Subway multi-foot sandwich and plenty of beer!  I recall he had a lot of cleaning me up the next day.  And a good time was had by all!

It was so good to see the old man that once played with me!  He came to a garage sale Mike was having.  As he toured my updated ‘innards’, he regaled Mike with his childhood stories, all of which I recall well.  When he played hide-and-seek with his sisters, he would hide in the top shelf of a closet Mike tore out during a remodel.  Those were good times for me.
The 1930s and 40s

If you want, prepare a picture to post along with your statements.  And FYI, as many of you already know, Gary Stroud, gstroud8801@aol.com or stroudg@franklin.edu, is collecting statements and will post for you if you prefer.  Send him your statements, your address, and a photo of your home (optional) and they will get posted before noon on the 16th.   This display will also be set up at the Schumacher Days Potluck Social, September 20th.

Participate in Schumacher Days Events!
September 16, 2012, Noon to 4 PM
Over the next five days, you will receive an email/day or see a Facebook or website post about one of the art- and history-related activities of Schumacher Days.  Each email or post will tell you what to expect when you arrive on the 16th and provide you opportunity to contribute to its success in advance.  Remember, most of you ARE SPCA and we can not pull this off without you.  If you are willing and able, step up and help us carry out the activity.  Otherwise, come and have fun!  Participating either way is fine by us!

Decades of Food: Appreciating the Abundance of America
Location:  Deck and Patio @ 799 Beech Street
At the event…
Neighborhood ‘foodies’ and local establishments will provide us with popular food dishes representative of different decades.  1) Find the dishes and related historical notes on the deck.  2) Enjoy them on the patio or as you stroll elsewhere.  First come, first served!  When there gone they’re gone!   3)  Browse through the display of well-known cookbooks from the past and present on the patio.  If you see a recipe you want, fill out the request form and we’ll be sure you get a copy.

Before the event…
BE a neighborhood ‘foodie’ and commit to bringing a dish and researching its history a little.  And/or, commit to bringing some classic, blast-from-the-past or unusual cookbooks for the ‘Cookbook Shelf’.  Be sure you have labeled them with necessary contact information.  Please let Jo Anne St. Clair of your intention to commit to this activity at joastclair@aol.com.  She will provide you with additional guidance, if needed, when you contact her.

Schumacher Days

Schumacher Place Hosts Event to Honor
the Community’s Past and Present

Schumacher Place is hosting a special event noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, September 16 2012, to celebrate the community’s heritage and character through art.
“Schumacher Days: Exploring Art, Embracing History” combines four artistic experiences to explore the community’s past and present.
The main experience, “Footprints in the Paint,” celebrates Schumacher as it is today through a communal art project. Participants (adults, children, pets) will dip their bare feet or paws in paint, and make their way across a giant canvas. The resulting work will be framed and exhibited in the community.
Another happening, “If the Walls Could Talk,” focuses on the histories of homes in Schumacher. Homeowners are invited to write about something their homes might have witnessed over the years – from the viewpoint of the homes, themselves.  And “Poetry Posts, Please” explores poetry about Columbus through the years.  Poems will be posted around the neighborhood the day of the event.
Even food served during the event has a historic component: “Food through the Decades” features dishes and appetizers associated with different decades and an exhibit of a variety of well-known cook books through the years.
In conjunction with Schumacher Days, event organizers have commissioned a videographer to create a short documentary about living in Schumacher Place during Columbus’ bicentennial year. The video will include   shots of the event. The event is open to anyone and is free. It begins with “Footprints in the Paint” near the intersection of Beech and Columbus Streets in Schumacher Place. A map of other event locations will be available there.

Schumacher Days 2012 is made possible through support of the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s Franklin County Neighborhood Arts program (www.gcac.com), funded by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, and Schumacher Place Civic Association.

Block Party!

Get ready for the 2012 Summer Block Party!

This Summer the SPCA is throwing a Summer Block Party for the entire Schumacher Place neighborhood. This will be a great night of food, music, fun, and conversation. There will be something for everyone! We will have a pig roast, music, corn hole, ping pong, inflatable bounce house (for the kids), kid games, cotton candy, card games, and more. Please don't miss this great neighborhood event. The Summer Block Party will be Saturday, July 14th from 4:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Columbus Street between Beech & Bruck Streets. We will have the street blocked off and have a big grassy lot on that street for all the festivities. The Summer Block Party is FREE, but we are asking that folks, if able, bring a side dish to share with the neighborhood. We will have plenty of drinks available (soda/pop, water, lemonade, etc...), but bring your own beer/wine if you'd like.

Please invite your neighbors. We hope this is a great night for the whole neighborhood, kids and adults alike.

We will also be selling the newly designed Schumacher Place T-Shirts. Plan to buy one or two to support and show your neighborhood pride!

We hope you'll join us for a great evening!
